Influencing public policy is like a marathon. It requires intensive preparation, deep commitment, and the will to keep going, even when the finish line is out of sight. In my career in government relations, I’ve pursued several “marathon” initiatives while working in 4 distinct branches:— As a legislative aide on Capitol Hill, I first experienced the lobbying process and saw how policies were debated and enacted into law.— As a lobbyist for a major trade association, I relentlessly pursued the policy priorities of our members and succeeded in preventing funding cuts that would have crippled key programs.— My next challenge was launching the first DC office for MeadWestvaco (now WestRock) and creating the strategy for all of our government relations efforts across North America.— More recently (2018-21), recognizing a missing piece in my experience portfolio, I secured an appointment with the Department of Commerce as Director of the International Trade Administration's (ITA) Office of Legislative & Intergovernmental Affairs, as the agency's lead liaison with Capitol Hill.— As of January 2021, I serve as the Executive Director of the Council of Industrial Boiler Owners (CIBO), which represents the interests of industrial, commercial and institutional energy producers. CIBO focuses on safe, cost-effective, and reliable energy and environmental technology solutions.My passion is working to pinpoint public policy strategies and messaging that have an impact on business competitiveness. I have led successful coalition advocacy efforts on major public policy issues of importance to U.S. manufacturing (taxation, international trade, environment, energy, transportation, workforce issues). This work requires a high degree of business acumen combined with an ability to craft strategic lobbying initiatives focused on legislation and regulations. With the measured pace of a marathoner going the distance, I lay the groundwork for success with strategy, a plan, and deep commitment to the process.
