Profile bio

About Alexander Morris

Passionate event planner, community organizer, and entrepreneur with a diverse work history in event planning, community organizing, education, politics, and public policy. Offering over 25 years' of valuable work experience gained in a variety of roles as a event planner, community organizer, social worker, teacher, and lead organizer for community development projects. Committed to organizing educational, cultural, and fundraising social events to promote vibrant and thriving communities as well as organizing marginalized communities and building bridges between communities to strengthen coalitions united towards a common goal (such as Communities United for Police Reform). In New York I was heavily involved in community development projects in both Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 10 years. I'd like to manifest more of that type of work in Houston. Specifically I am looking for event planning and community organizing opportunities. Creating events that bring people together gives me a special kind of joy and fulfillment; and community organizing that plays an active role in making the world a better place is (challenging but) very rewarding work.According to the "Strengths Finder 2.0" by Tom Rath my top 5 skills are: Individualization, Input, Positivity, Strategic, and WOO (Winning Others Over). The interdependence of these natural skill sets result in being an incredibly strategic thinker and collectivistic leader who readily and enthusiastically inputs new information easily, identifies patterns naturally, and learns quickly. I cater to the individual situation/client/student/co-worker/member of the community and maintain a positive, inclusive, open-minded, and resilient attitude that helps develop a more enjoyable and productive working environment. I pay attention patterns and what makes people tick, which allows me to cater to someone's particular and complex individuality by making them feel welcome or simply by being a natural Connector Personality who links people together (in building a coalition for example).

Listed skills include Event Planning, Community Outreach, Psychology, Social Justice, and 46 others.

Current
All The Us'S

I created my own business hand-in-hand with two other Leaders, Ashley Voigt and Malcolm Brown-Herrera. All the Us's has expanded to include event planning, adult education, and community organizing.A relatively new direction I personally have focused on in the last few years was inspired by my tenure as a Montessori teacher. I have taken the Personal World and Personal Reflection curricula that I taught to the teenagers at Woodrow Wilson Montessori School [now known as Baker Montessori] and modified it to teach adults because they never learned these lessons on Intrapersonal Intelligence or how to even do these Personal Reflection, recentering, and calm down activities in the first place. 99% of adults in America never learned how to look within, how to Unplug, how to reconnect with Mother Nature, and how to (most importantly) do quiet introspective personal reflection activities 30 minutes a day as the teenagers I taught know how to do.To keep everything simple and straight forward every workshop we teach is divided into 30 minute increments, which means that we can tailor a four hour-long workshop or an hour-long series of Mini Lessons and activities to the needs of the group or individual. As a Renaissance Man I can teach a wide variety of subjects, but for now the main focus of what I teach includes:*Journaling exercises to look within and get to know yourself on a much deeper level*Meditation classes (Chakra, Zen Buddhist, Mindfulness, stress relief, etc.)*How to Unplug and inspire a harm reduction mindset in response to our society's addiction to Screen Time*Reconnecting with Mother Nature in an urban environment, such as creating Andy Goldsworthy-inspired art*Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training and community dialogue*Mini lessons on social justice topics and community dialogue*Personal World lessons for developing your Intrapersonal Intelligenceas well as a plethora of other Personal Reflection activities

Community Organizer For Globe

Brooklyn, New York, Us

I was the GLOBE (Gays and Lesbians Organizing Bushwick Empowerment) intern. Once my internship was over, I became a community organizer for Make the Road New York, and I worked some of their campaigns (through Make the Road's PAC) and fundraising social events. As the intern (and later as a community organizer) I:*Ran two weekly meetings for the group (the general meeting and the event subcommittee meeting) *Planned programming*Created fundraising social events*Spearheaded new LGBTQ social justice campaigns*Led the outreach team in weekly outreach efforts, managed the volunteer team*Taught workshops both in house and at area high schools *Networked with, developed stronger relationships with, and outreached to allied organizations*Created pamphlets, palm cards, outreach materials, etc.*Led the decoration committee for various fundraising social events*Executed and analyzed two needs assessments: one on bullying in two area high schools and another on transgender employment discrimination, which eventually led to a successful campaign to change the hiring polices of American Eagle and other local and national retailers in Manhattan*Provided informal one on one counseling or conflict resolutionOne of the efforts I am most proud of was a multi-year effort working with local high schools to help assuage homophobia at the Academy of Urban Planning and the Bushwick School for Social Justice. I also helped create an annual LGBTQ Pride Week and Gay/Straight Alliance for the students at both schools. Watching the students evolve and become more accepting of their LGBTQ classmates, seeing the dramatic impact of the workshops I led, and watching bullying curtail dramatically was really rewarding. It felt good to have a powerful impact at two high schools for hundreds of students.

Programming Committee Member And Transgender Work Group Committee Member

Brooklyn, Ny, Us

I volunteered at BCPC, which is working to create a Brooklyn LGBTQ Center in downtown Brooklyn. In my work with BCPC some of my contributions included:*Serving on the Programming Committee*Serving as a leader in the Transgender Work Group*Acting as a leading in the outreach team *Co-writing a grant *Helping execute two needs assessments on the needs of Brooklynites: Identifying gaps in services and programming that BCPC could provide (What do LGBTQ people want in a community center and what are community priorities?) and assessing LGBTQ life in Brooklyn, such as issues like hate crimes and safetyThe grant that I co-wrote was for a college preparedness program for working class LGBTQ teens of color in underserved neighborhoods who need some support, assistance, and guidance on how to get into college. Funding is needed for a small team to organize and lead college trips to visit schools in New England that the teens in the program were interested in attending. We would also help students get summer jobs or internships, preferably related to what they might want to do in life in the future. Just as important, we would plan 'field trips' around the city and its suburbs to check out some events at local colleges, such as basketball games, art galleries, and theater. These field trips would serve to give students a taste of life in college but also to get them excited about what's to come, which helps with motivation and staying on track. There would also be a mentoring component, tutoring and help with school work like paper writing. Another major element of the program is providing thorough assistance on filling out the college applications, guiding students to write essays that let them shine, and financial aid forms.

Sep 2008 - Mar 2010

Clinical Social Work Intern

*Created new weekly programming including a new group called "Music and Memories" where seniors would present a favorite song that meant something meaningful to them via playing it on a tape deck, CD player, or record player (or even singing) and then they would talk about what that song, album, or singer makes them reminisce about. We would then be open it up to the rest of the group to chime in. This ended up being one of the most popular weekly groups and satisfied a deep need in seniors for Life Review (as well as just being fun)*Counseled a moderate caseload of one on one clients*Ran groups including "Current Events Discussion"*Engaged seniors in informal counseling in a very casual community center atmosphere*Gained cultural competence around the issues pertaining to working with (mainly) Sicilian-, Italian-, and Asian-American 1st and 2nd Generation seniors*Aided in casework for members as necessary or helping with tasks like teaching computer literacy

Aug 2006 - May 2007

Aug 2001 - May 2003

Peer Educator

New York, Us

Outspoken is a team of peer educators working to create awareness of the effects of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. Through entertaining and innovative workshops, Outspoken tackles a variety of topics related to the challenges that LGBTQ individuals face. Outspoken also innovated a Safe Zone Program to identify administrators, professors, counselors, and staff at NYU who are LGBTQ-affirmative. After completing our three hour training program of LGBT 101, participants would receive a Safe Zone sticker for their office to prominently identify themselves as were queer-friendly.Outspoken allowed me to evolve as a confident public speaker and become very adept at creating and innovating original workshops. Because of Outspoken I have developed a strong skillset that dove tailed with my theatre background including self-assurance in my ability to improvise on the fly when facilitating a workshop. I also have learned the incredibly important aspect of organizing: how to tailor a workshop (or message) to a given audience. For example, when we would present to a room full of (mostly) nurses at NYU we would have a very different version of the same workshop that we had presented a week ago to a freshman dorm. Outspoken focused very much on leadership development on campus, and through our Outspoken retreats, Diversity Weekend, and Social Justice Weekend retreats we were treated to a wonderfully intense learning curve on intersections of oppression, civil rights organizing, history, messaging, consciousness raising, building bridges between disparate communities, coalition politics, and all sorts of other related topics that have helped me have a deep level of analysis when it comes to public policy. It included some of my favorite experiences at NYU and is very much responsible for the backbone of my education as a community organizer who focuses on minority issues.
