I write for the subsidiary brand of Nordic Visitor, which produces content on Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia. This role has been an informative and enjoyable transition from voluntary to professional writing. I have learnt more about a writer’s role within a larger company and in particular with regards to brand formation.

I tutor a number of UK and US students ranging from Primary 1 into A Level English Literature. As part of this role, I complete frequent lesson planning and in depth progress reports for my clients. This requires excellent communication and evaluation skills.

Within the trends team, I researched and compiled data about publishing trends, then presented my findings in an accessible format for our fortnightly edition of the magazine.

My main responsibilities as a volunteer included helping writing for the monthly newsletter, aiding the running of social media accounts, such as Twitter and Instagram, and live-tweeting online symposiums and social events. Adapting copy for a differing audience of both professional scholars and other Plath fans required skill in producing accessible yet engaging copy.

A Room of One’s Own was an international platform for female or non-binary writers that published pieces of creative writing and opinion or lifestyle blog posts. I worked as the chief editor for the creative writing column, taking responsibility for ensuring that submissions were published promptly and to a high syntactical and grammatical standard. My eye for grammatical errors and ability to re-structure and re-form sentences for clear readability developed hugely through this role.

As an author for The Birmingham Tab, I submitted and published numerous articles, including both feature and news pieces. For the majority of articles, I was required to travel to locations to take relevant pictures, interview members of the public over certain issues and attend particular events that I have reported on.

I worked for 9 weeks on a summer camp in Pennsylvania as a general full-time counsellor, living with and looking after ten nine-year-old children throughout their time at summer camp. The job role required attendance at all activities with the campers, responsibility for their well-being during field trips, and occasionally the responsibility to run certain activities.

My main responsibilities were shelving and answering student queries on the service desk, through which I became familiar with the ways the library was managed. I also worked on the library’s temporary Philip Larkin exhibition.
