I help students who are predicted to fail GCSE maths to pass first time. I teach big-picture concepts alongside key mathematical diagrams. This helps students identify the logic at play in random questions, ensuring success in their GCSE maths exams.

I teach maths at Totnes Progressive School. Since I started at ToPS I have taught students from age 11-16, including delivering the GCSE qualification. I have developed my skills in Mastery Mathematics and now work daily with Concrete-Pictorial-Language-Abstract methodology.My current focus is on intervention and supporting children who struggle with maths. I use concrete manipulatives to build mathematical concepts. These are powerful in developing amongst other things: number sense, fraction skills, place value, and algebra. I believe that when you first encounter a new idea, it is important that you play with it to discover what it is about. In so doing, you develop a sophisticated language for describing it. Once you have the language, you have the concept. My greatest interest therefore is in developing the questions that allow those explorations.My work is interesting and engaging.

I am a Steiner teacher, currently teaching Classes 8, 9 and 10 Maths and Drama. The school began offering the Steiner School Certificate for the first time in September 2013 - the year I joined the school. This New Zealand accredited programme allows Steiner graduates to enter university, but more importantly it offers a new perspective on formal assessment, which I have always observed to be a great contradiction in education. I continue with my research on assessment and learning, which I see as the tempestuous interplay between the subjective and the objective results of learning.

I co-ordinated the Summer Language School at South Devon Steiner School. Each summer, 48 students come to improve their language skills through our Steiner-inspired course. We offer many practical activities which offer students the opportunity to speak English in a wide variety of contexts. I designed the programme, appointed staff, ran the budget, co-ordinated the tours, enrolled the students, arranged host families and generally troubleshooted!I left in order to take up more teaching duties at South Devon Steiner School.

I taught English, Drama and Maths at the Imhoff Waldorf High School in the pioneering years of its high school, working with Class 8, 9 and 10. I directed two Class 9 Shakespeare plays.During this time I also tutored maths in a private capacity from home.

I taught a level 4 Maths Literacy course to adult women training in Early Childhood Development. The general level of literacy was low, necessitating the teaching of fundamental concepts, such as how to use a ruler. However, the course also covered sophisticated ideas on government budgets, foreign trade, interest and so on. I was able to develop mathematical skills in a very poor language context - work of which I am very proud. The pass rate was 100% for all students who attended.

I have been bridging the administrative gap, as Imhoff Waldorf School increases its administrative base and obtains green power to computerise the office. Much of my role has been in enrolment and marketing - using my thorough understanding of Waldorf education to orientate interested parents as to why Waldorf education is remarkable.My strategic planning, and organisational capacities, have been useful for improving the administrative services the school can apply. I am currently handing over to a new full time staff member so that I can complete my final year of teacher training in 2010.
