About Alexandra Morse

Currently doing an MRes in Clinical Research at Imperial College London after studying MSci Immunology and Pharmacology at the University of Strathclyde with the hope of eventually ending up in a career in research. I am a hardworking and reliable individual and like to use my spare time in a proactive way to gain knowledge and experience whilst also by helping others around me. Aside from this, I like to keep active by regularly going to the gym and going out walking as well as taking part in Pilates and yoga classes. I enjoy a challenge to expand my skills, whether working within a team or on my own and can complete set tasks efficiently within a given time frame. Due to being a determined person I am very driven to get the best out of the opportunities I take on and am capable of adapting to many different environments to enable me to perform in the best way possible whilst also networking within my field. This allows me to develop transferable skills which I can then use throughout my career.

    Where pharmacology and microfluidics meet. This 4-week research project involved use of a Physio Mimix Pharmacokinetic (PMX-PK) system to determine the drug profiles on various tumour models. Colorectal (SW620) and carcinoma (A549) tumour cell lines were used for spheroid generation in which drugs were then applied to. Both 2D and 3D cultures, use of inserts, endpoint viability assays, image processing, and data analysis on GraphPad was carried out to analyse data. Basic lab skills such as pipetting, centrifugation and cell culturing were additionally developed through this project.

    Predicting the ADME properties of different in haled medications. This 4-week research project entailed using a Physio Mimix organ-on-chip system to create a cellular scaffold which mimicked the lung system using alveolar, bronchial, and endothelial cells. To begin with cell were seeded on the transwell scaffolds within the plates to build up the tissue environment. The system was then switched on and specific asthmatic drugs were applied. TEER, LDH, and ELISA were then carried out to analysis the tissue health metrics and the barrier integrity. This project also allowed my basic lab techniques to be further developed such as pipetting, centrifugation, and cell culture.

This entailed use of in vitro cell culture system, flow cytometers, and confocal microscopy in order to allow an in depth analysis of mononuclear phagocytes and myeloid cell differentiation with in specific gamma-delta T cell mice models. This was carried out in a research lab within the University hospital.
