My position includes admission and discharge of patients, administering medication, frequent evaluation and documentation of behavior, as well as providing education on their plan of care, medication they are prescribed, developing and leading a daily mental health focused educational nursing group, interdisciplinary care planning with medical and psychiatric providers as well as therapists, dietary staff, and mental health techs. Other responsibilities of my role include obtaining lab specimens as needed per physician orders, processing with patients especially in acute crisis situations, communicating with family members or guardians on the patient’s condition and patient’s needs as needed, and facilitating a treatment ready milieu by always keeping patient and staff safety as the first priority. I frequently floated to two or more units in one shift, depending on the needs of the hospital. I assisted with bedside procedures as needed such as chest tube placement, and peritoneal dialysis, patient medication administration, frequent patient assessment, and worked closely with providers to care for patients with serious or complicated health conditions. Patient and family education was also a main focus throughout the patient’s stay as well as upon discharge.
