I came to PetPeople for for my exceptional interpersonal skills and my extensive knowledge about dogs. While there I provided sales assistance and customer service for this privately owned pet food and supply store. I would identify the customer needs by asking questions and consulting with them by making product recommendations. I applied my knowledge of education by identifying and customizing my approach with each customer. Like students, customers learn and process information differently and being flexible with my approach and presentation allowed me to be a very successful sales associate. I currently have had highest individual sales in my store for 3 consecutive months. My work here reinforced my developing practice of an individualized approach to customer service, making a genuine connection with each person.

During my final internship year at Clarkston Community Schools, I progressed from assisting the teacher with classroom functions to leading four different classes with 30-70 students in each classroom. I created lesson plans for all four different language levels, prepared/taught materials and assisted students one-on-one. I created and graded my own tests and handled the discipline of students while communicating with parents. With teaching four different grade levels and at different schools really I created the best organization and time management system to insure my classes succeeded. I made sure each class had all the proper materials and presentations all while being able to accommodate the requests and needs of my special needs students. I was also given the task of using classroom management and discipline theories to help modify the environment and direction of my classroom. For example, I completed two case studies on individual students with behavioral and/or learning difficulties. I used these techniques to improve ability to better teach these students. I greatly reduced outbursts of an ADHD student after gathering ideas and implementing a plan to modify his behavior. Which included enlisting the student as classroom assistant and giving student responsibilities. From this experience I improved upon and practiced what I learned during my masters program, and I became a very efficient multi-tasker and communicator.

Julie mentored me in dog training techniques and I observed her interactions with clients for a number of years before I instructed classes with her and took on private clients of my own. By working with Julie I developed and expanded on my interpersonal skills as well at my leadership ability. By co-instructing with her I became confident in my presentation skills with her immediate corrections and feedback. I observed what made her interactions with clients successful and apply them to my own clients. During my time I helped her expand her business by creating and managing the company website and all social media outreaches. I oversaw and lead the digitization of her client database, which created an increase in efficiency and customer satisfaction. Overall by working with Julie I became confident not only as a presenter/educator but also as a leader. I will bring my solid foundation of leadership and confidence into any future position.
