    Effect of Adhesive thickness on Failure Mode I and II and Damage Tolerance of Bonded Composite JointsAs part of my Franco-German dual master’s degree, I undertook my final year thesis at the Composites Technology department of Airbus Operations GmbH Bremen.During those 8 months, the effect of adhesive thickness on failure mode and damage tolerance of adhesively bonded composite joints was studied. Within the framework of determination of the failure mode I and II that goes along with the fracture toughness energy (GIC and GIIC), double-cantilever-beam (DCB) adhesive joints specimens and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. To determine the damage tolerance, impacts tests were conducted and the damaged area was obtained by means of an ultra- sonic scan. Rheological and thermal analysis (DSC) on several materials were as well conducted.

In the course of this work placement I was absorbed in various assignments. The aim of this work related to helping engineers and technicians on their own projects.Through these six months, the manufacturing of Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced-Plastic (CFRP) samples by means of:- Resin Infusion (RI)- Modified Vacuum Infusion (MVI)- Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM)- Autoclave processesThe analysis of different samples using thermal Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were conducted. I worked as well on a project that implied quality inspection of materials. I participated to one project of co-bonding amelioration for CFRP.
