MSc Thesis with Imperial College.Following the results of the thesis, it was decided to experiment with a trial project in the field.Abstract:Improved recovery from mature fields has recently become a topic of increased interest. Mature fields, even sometimes abandoned in the past, are now of great interest to oil companies and show good prospects for the future. Due to increasing demand and high oilprices, previously uneconomical projects are now economically justifiable.Janice is a mature water-flooded field, with unswept low permeability sands in the upper part of the reservoir. This study has identified that the implementation of SWAG on Janice could result in an increase of the ultimate oil recovery, whilst requiring minor changes to the current surface facilities.Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) techniques are increasingly used nowadays to recover more from mature oil fields. In the North Sea, these have been used for over 30 years, and most of them are now fully understood and extensively used. Among them, Water Alternating Gas injection (WAG) has been proved successful in the past and is the most used IOR in the North Sea. Simultaneous Water and Gas Injection (SWAG) is still not as widely used as WAG, which is a more mature technology, being primarily used for gas disposal rather than IOR.Various economic scenarios have been investigated. The benefit of SWAG on Janice is estimated to be a minimum 1.5% increase on current Expected Ultimate Recovery (EUR).
