As Arzeda's CTO from the company's inception until December 2013, I have led Arzeda's technical effort including;1) put together a team of world-class scientists by recruiting 5 PhDs in computational protein design, protein engineering, bioinformatics and metabolic engineering, as well as research associates to support Arzeda's technical platform2) defined the company's IP strategy, recruit and interface with Arzeda's IP lawyer team, wrote and filed patent applications3) spearheaded and managed Arzeda's proprietary product lead, including securing and managing multi-year NSF SBIR Phase I and Phase II grants4) managed a multi-year industrial collaboration (with a budget in excess of $2.0M and a multinational team)5) conceived Arzeda's software infrastructure strategy, participated in its early development, transition it to the development team and oversaw its successful scale-up and implementation

My doctoral work has focused on developing innovative computational enzyme design algorithms and applying them to the successful design novel enzymes that do not exist in Nature, an achievement that has been regarded one of the graal of the field of protein engineering. My graduate work has been recognized through 4 highly cited publications in the elite journals Science and Nature (themselves featured in highlights and commentaries in the press), and 2 issued patents.During the first part of my doctoral studies, I invented a new, fast hashing algorithm to automate enzymatic active sites placements in a library of scaffolds, with linear complexity, and implemented it in the software package Rosetta. This software has been used to design, to date, over 75 new enzymes for four different reactions. It has been used by several other academic groups and my original publication was cited more than 250 times in the literature. In the second part of my PhD work, I initiated (and, when a junior graduate student joined my project, led) the successful design a novel stereoselective Diels-Alderase enzyme. During this second part of the my tenure in the Baker lab, I also experimentally characterized a variety of natural and designed enzymes, including performing protein expression, purification and assay development and collaborating with an X-ray crystallography group.
