Alexandre Zanghellini co-founded Arzeda and currently serves as its Chief Executive Officer. He leads Arzeda’s product and technology development and corporate strartegy. Alex is one of the key inventors of Arzeda’s synthetic biology platform for novel enzyme and metabolic pathway design and is a keen believer in the power of biotechnology to solve some of our biggest societal challenges. Before founding Arzeda, Alex held positions in research and development both in academia and industry. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle, a M.Sc. Eng. in computer engineering from ENSTA/ParisTech and a MS in computer science from the University of Paris Pierre et Marie Curie/Paris VI.

Doctoral Fellow In David Baker'S LaboratoryUniversity Of Washington Jan 2004 - Mar 2009Seattle, Wa, UsMy doctoral work has focused on developing innovative computational enzyme design algorithms and applying them to the successful design novel enzymes that do not exist in Nature, an achievement that has been regarded one of the graal of the field of protein engineering. My graduate work has been recognized through 4 highly cited publications in the elite journals Science and Nature (themselves featured in highlights and commentaries in the press), and 2 issued patents.During the first part of my doctoral studies, I invented a new, fast hashing algorithm to automate enzymatic active sites placements in a library of scaffolds, with linear complexity, and implemented it in the software package Rosetta. This software has been used to design, to date, over 75 new enzymes for four different reactions. It has been used by several other academic groups and my original publication was cited more than 250 times in the literature. In the second part of my PhD work, I initiated (and, when a junior graduate student joined my project, led) the successful design a novel stereoselective Diels-Alderase enzyme. During this second part of the my tenure in the Baker lab, I also experimentally characterized a variety of natural and designed enzymes, including performing protein expression, purification and assay development and collaborating with an X-ray crystallography group. -
