Advanced Manufacturing Repair Technologies Intern - Additive
During this rotation, I was working within the Additive Manufacturing Team at General Electric Gas Power. This role primarily related to the design of gas turbine hardware with a focus on discovering ways to create parts through additive manufacturing. Throughout these 12 weeks, I greatly improved upon my knowledge of Siemens NX to design parts while keeping additive manufacturing capabilities in mind. I have learned how the Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) process works and how to operate various different machines in order to build the parts that I designed in NX. I helped design and fabricate multiple different fixtures for LEAN manufacturing, which gave me some experience with the fabrication and Prototyping team. I investigated new techniques to remove residual powder from complex structures within these additive parts, and qualified a process that reduces the production time by 85% compared to the previous method. In total I set-up and completed over 10 builds, which each included modeling in NX, build preparation in Magics software, helping set-up and watch the machine during the build, and supporting various different post-processing operations.
Global Turbine Module Engineering Intern
This role primarily related to the design and analysis of gas turbine hardware, with a focus within the turbine module or hot gas path. I greatly improved my knowledge of NX Siemens CAD software in order to design and manipulate various parts, some of which were used during the first test of GE's newest gas turbine. I learned how to perform many different types of FEA Analyses by using ANSYS software to complete creep life, stress, and strain calculations, elastic-plastic analysis, and more. This position also included a 3 month-long managerial project, where I measured surface roughness data and pulled in observations from many different teams in order to determine if a specific manufacturing process could be altered to save time and money without decreasing performance.
Component Development & Test Engineering Intern
Worked to help test and qualify components for the newest turbine in GE's arsenal, while working with a multitude of vendors to guide them in machining and preparing different blades and wheels. By re-designing equipment used by contractors during manufacturing, I decreased costs by 60%. I qualified vendors to confirm whether they met certain standards, and were approved to complete various jobs to the specification for the company. Learned how to use Siemen's NX CAD software, interacted with 3D printing technology to create parts, and learned how to splice and weld in order to install sensors such as strain gauges and thermocouples.
Food Server
Served on 4 to 5 tables at a time, assisting with their food and beverages. Learned better time management skills, having to prioritize tasks in the most efficient way. Improved my communicative skills while interacting with customers and diffusing situations if customers were unhappy with their experience.
