Alex was responsible for the review and approval of Project Management Plans (PMPs) for new mining projects. Alex directed the progress of company investigations into mine site accidents and independently investigated fatal/near-fatal accidents, preparing ‘investigation factual reports’ and ‘briefs of evidence’. Developed online SRS industry occurrence reporting tool for 'seismicity/falls of ground' for trend analysis and proactive intervention by the inspectorate. Developed Australia's first paste/ hydraulic fill high impact function audit, codifying the learnings from the 2000 Bronzewing Disaster (see WA DMP website - audits & guidelines). Alex led a hydraulic fill risk assessment & procedure development project (codified learnings from Bronzewing Disaster in 2000).Alex created geotechnical engineering systems, including mapping and stability assessments, stress measurement (HI cell) and modelling (Map3D), creation of standard ground support designs, QA/QC and created Osborne's first ground control management plan (GCMP).Trained geologists in geotech data collection (UG mapping & core logging) and new engineers in mine design and planning.Member of Emergency Response Team.     Hired to replace 3 expert consultants at the Kidston open cut gold mine in north Qld, Alex was responsible for contract management of in-pit ground support and it’s interface with owner-operator truck-shovel production activities in a confined space. The mine was medium grade (and low gold price) nearing the mine closure stage. Alex was a team member (with BFP Consultants) working on a pit cutback design (Gemcom), support design & stability monitoring of the main pit haul road, under threat from a large wedge failure, using extensive instrumentation (prisms, extensometers, crack monitors). Alex created a 3D structural model for long term stability analyses (by Norbert Bazynski).Liaison with Mines Department Inspectors. Mine closure preparation.     Hired specifically to help turn around the aging Renison Tin Mine (on the West Coast of Tasmania) for a new mine owner. As the mine was transitioning to seismically active conditions, focussed on troubleshooting high stope dilution and high operating costs associated with poor ground conditions.Renison was a variably dipping orebody mined using SLOS, flat backing and CAF methods, including Avoca. Alex reviewed Renison’s mining methods and sequencing, creating a new LOM plan ensuring only profitable stopes were mined. Responsible for all long term mine planning (Surpac, AutoCAD) and scheduling (Mine Works Planner), contract tendering & contract management. The open pit mine was encroaching on the underground operations.Role:* Annual Underground Ore Reserve Estimates* Supervision & undertaking of: production design (Datamine & AutoCAD), ventilation (VentSim), scheduling, backfill (CRF), ground support & services (incl raiseborer for ventilation and slots). * Liaise with underground foremen and open pit engineers (pit directly over underground). * Order explosives and consumables (logistically complex). * Ground monitoring instrumentation. * Training National engineers.First female underground mining engineer to work at Porgera JV, PNG. Followed fast by the amazing Julie Devine. Preceded by awesome Metallurgists Michelle Robinson & Joyce Bartell. Experience working in an undeveloped economy where conditions could be dangerous.
