I am an explorer.In my career I have explored deserts, rivers, polar areas and sailed two oceans. Adventure is my great passion and master of life, which has taught me to thrive in an increasingly unpredictable, complex and uncertain world.In 2001 I participated in the Marathon des Sables, a 260km self-supporter footrace in Morocco.In 2002 and 2003 I crossed Alaska on foot pulling a sled, for a total of 2000km.In 2006 I was the first man in the world to cross the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean alone on a rowing boat.In 2008 I rowed the Pacific Ocean, from Lima to Australia in 294 days.In 2011 I ran across the United States, from Los Angeles to New York (5300km in 70 days).In 2017 I crossed the largest glacier in Europe (Vatnajokull, Iceland) in 13 days.More recently, from 2019 to 2023 I sailed on the ten most plastic polluted rivers in the world, responsible for 80% of the plastic that pollutes the oceans, with the goal of creating environmental awareness and helping to give birth to a new ecological thinking. As part of the same project, in 2019 I rowed through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest accumulation of plastic in the Pacific Ocean.

I give talks to companies such as Ferrari, ABB, ING, and Accenture and to organisations including LUISS University the Bocconi Business School.I share the commitment that enabled me to undertake two solo ocean crossings on a rowing boat and to get up again after the shipwreck in 2004. I share the radical mindset shift that occurred to me during an extremely difficult time in the Pacific ocean, and I describe the teamwork and the resilience required during the 70 consecutive days it took me to run across United States from Los Angeles to New York. I talk about the coaching framework I use to support athletes and business professionals to pursuit optimum performance – focus, strengths, energy, rhythm and activation.In 2017, I hosted the four-episode tv program “A single origin - il gusto del viaggio” aired on RAI 2.
