This internship has exposed me to a more behind the scenes look into how churches function in multiple areas like finances, creative, pastoral care, human resources, students, and more. I provided assistance with the data input of hundreds of church launches for the year 2018 as well as organizing the data to present and store in our records. I assisted in the project management for churches launching by being apart of the process in how a pastor can get ARC financial and material support.

While working at the Heat Pizza Bar I have encountered a lot of difficulties that have forced me to develop my skills in multi-tasking, time management, and how to work well with people. At the Heat, I serve as a waiter that’s required to make sure that each customer that I’m responsible for has the best experience when they come in. This means that each table of customers that I have are served within a reasonable time and their needs are met with efficiency and a great attitude. During this line of work handling situations within a high pressure environment is part of a normal shift, but being able to work efficiently and effectively during this time is what separates great servers. Specifically, the nights where it’s really late, the place is packed out, you have a hundred different things to worry about and on top of all that your co-workers are giving you no support. I have served many nights like these that have really pushed me to focus my efforts and stay disciplined in the task but also remain calm in high pressure situations and make rational decisions. Handling environments like this one are important to any work culture because it develops skills as a leader and encourages hard work to accomplish a goal.

My involvement at Church of the Highlands has really prepared me to grow in my abilities as a leader in multiple areas. When I received the Campus Leader position for Tuscaloosa it became my biggest opportunity to develop my skills as a leader. I was given the responsibility to lead a team of 20 plus leaders, to serve over 500 students in the Tuscaloosa area, as well as having the passion to grow and strive for more. Being associated with Church of the Highlands has helped tremendously in our growth by allowing us to partner in the churches vision but tweak the process in how we accomplish that vision. We focused on building a community of leaders who were passionate about serving the next generation and putting a priority on the purpose of the serve rather than just being here to accomplish a task. As a result we have a team of 100 plus leaders serving in our church, leading small groups, and actively investing in these student’s lives. Through this experience I’ve developed my skills in growing and leading a team, communicating effectively, administration work, and much more. By now having such a healthy team and always developing leaders to serve, I’ve been able to lead our team in a healthy direction by being more intentional for the future.

In a lot of the jobs and positions that I’ve been a part of I have been required to work with a lot of different people. Now I love people, I’m a people person but people can sometimes be very difficult to serve and work with. Back in high school I worked at a major Garden Shop that required an extensive knowledge in horticulture as well as the ability to communicate with customers in an effective way. I was mainly responsible for the management and sales of the larger plants like evergreens, trees, and bigger shrubs. In this position, strategic planning and organizing areas are very important to healthy growth and proper presentation for customers to want to purchase. In multiple cases a conflict of design or placement will ensue among employees that requires a collaboration of ideas to please both parties while also accomplishing the task. In most cases I would breakdown the situation and allow for both parties to be heard, then collaborate both ideas into one result that will best accomplish the goal. By settling the conflict in this manner it shows respect being withheld amongst employees but also sets an expectations so that they then can see how conflict is handled so they can do it if I’m not there.
