I worked within the former Cargo Systems business which used to publish trade journals and maritime intelligence on the container shipping industry. I was taken on as principal researcher and analyst tasked with developing and overseeing a new project for the business. This was a worldwide survey investigating the potential impact on container port operations brought about by changes in: container shipping routes, container handling technologies, environmental pressures, multi-modal transportation and geographical profiles of port locations. This involved extensive telephone and face-to-face interviews with senior technical personnel representing 200 container ports around the world. The report sold in significant numbers, subsequent to which I initiated and devised a new programme of research. This was an in-depth investigation into evolving and nascent developments in container ship design, container handling technologies and port management IT systems, evaluating their potential impacts on port operations. As with the original report, this involved an extensive schedule of interviews with senior personnel across 100+ of the largest container ports in the world including over 40 hubs.
