Working within New Product Innovation (NPI), specially with the Environmental Control team

After my 9 months out working as a Dyson infrastructure project manager. I am now back in my NPI Environmental Control team work on future tech for environment control.

I am current on a 9 month secondment in the infrastructure team. I am running the re shopping of the existing Dyson Engineering building to create a much more spacious and flexible working space. I am also in control of reshuffling around 1000 engineers around the building to create more space. Other jobs that i am doing include moving one of Jame's Helicopters and conducting building work in all the team labs to bring the lab space to meet the teams requirements.

Working in Environmental control with in NPI is a challenging area to work in. NPI is the early concept design team and with in the team i was looking at way to control a users environment. I have one patient coming from a project in this team. Projects i have worked on include the Dyson Humidifier and Dyson Filter fans.

Currently doing a 6 month stint in the reliability team. I look at failures in the field, first from information from the call center and then second taking apart sent back items. Once this is done I will come up with a fix for the problem.

I began work at Dyson in the pick-up team. My design work mainly surrounded the cleaner heads and brush bar drive of the 360 eye robot. This included gearing, sound deadening, tensions, motor mounting, loom control, vibration deadening and motor control. A major part of this job was to maximise the efficiency of the airflow through the cleaner-head in order to optimise the amount of dust collected. During this project I headed up the drive assembly and worked between the drive team and pick up team, to meet the spec of the drive and the time scale set by the company.Reliability Engineer - January to April 2013I have just finished a 4 month secondment in the reliability team. During this time I looked at failures in the field, first from information from the call centre, and second from taking apart sent back items. Once this was done I had to find a solution for the problem. This work involved a large amount of data handling, and I used excel regularly at an advanced level. It also involved reporting to senior management about the problems that developed, including how much it cost the business and would cost the business in the future.NPI Design Engineer and Line managerSince the end of April I have been in the Environmental team in NPI (New Product Innovation). Here I am in-charge of a full assembly and I have a report to look after. This has enabled me to develop my management skills. Throughout the day I am filling many roles from test engineer to manager to designer to FEA engineer.Lab OwnerI am the owner of the NPI environmental lab. I am working on my LED down-lighting systems that really do what people want them to do. I did one design job for a perfume advert design for terminal 5, another that was LED living room up and down lighters. The biggest job was turning a school to LED lightingcoming to a total of £24,000.

I worked on all projects from desk lights to down-lighters to designing shows and lighting schemes for house. I have 5 products on sale all involving LED's. Not only did i do design work but the financial side of the company. I worked directly with customers and suppliers designing and manufacturing 1 off designs for customers as well as mass produced items.I am currently working on my own projects from home and doing lighting schemes.
