CurrentFreelance Medical Writer
I am working as a self-employed, freelance medical writer registered in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. I have experience drafting texts for clients in the field of clinical research, liaising with clinical research organisations and pharmaceutical companies. I have developed my interpersonal and communication skills in this role, gaining experience working for and collaborating with industrial stakeholders. From a scientific standpoint, I have developed my knowledge of pharmacology. I have also taken on many responsibilities from setting up, organising, and managing my sole proprietorship, Chappard Medical Writing, for this role.
Phd Candidate
I undertook my PhD in the Edinburgh Single-Molecule Biophysics Group (http://www.horrockslab.org) as part of the UK DRI centre at Edinburgh (https://ukdri.ac.uk) and the University of Edinburgh's School of Chemistry. My research focus was the use and development of single-molecule methods to detect and study alpha-synuclein aggregates in Parkinson's disease.During my PhD I was enrolled in the OPTIMA CDT in optical medical imaging with healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship (https://www.optima-cdt.ac.uk). This CDT provided master's level electives in business development and innovation in healthcare, which helped me to develop a portfolio of transferable skills from my PhD.
Science Policy Intern
I spent three months as a science policy intern at the Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM).Throughout this internship, I learned a great deal about science policy and diverse topics and issues in this field, the dynamics and collaboration involved in policy, and the interaction required between different biomedical stakeholders. I had responsibilities such as writing summary reports and briefings, compiling background documents, collaborating with stakeholders, and attending stakeholder meetings. This developed my writing, communication, and personal skills, while requiring me to draw on research skills I had developed during my PhD.
Professional Research Intern
I undertook a six month internship at the at the EMBL Australia node for Single-Molecule Science at the University of New South Wales to gain experience in a research environment outside of Europe. My research focus was on investigating the influence of Lewy Body proteins on alpha-synuclein aggregation in Parkinson's disease.I learned single-moelcule and fluorescence-based techniques which served as the basis for me pursuing a PhD in this field. In addition, I learned how to adapt to a new working environment.
