I progressed through positions of increasing responsibility since joining the Machinery Engineering team in 2013. During project execution my primary responsibilities were the technical specification, bid evaluation and selection of a broad range of rotating machinery and packaged equipment, post-order engineering documentation review, design verification, integration into the wider facility design and vendor management up to the point of equipment acceptance. I was responsible for the timely production of engineering deliverables according to the project schedule, identification and management of technical risks throughout the project, remaining accountable for all technical aspects of the equipment until successfully installed, commissioned and handed-over to the customer.Types of equipment under my responsibility included centrifugal and positive-displacement compressors, cryogenic pumps, cryogenic turbo-expanders, cooling water systems and packaged process equipment.

In this 2-year assignment I was responsible for undertaking and leading engineering activities to support the development of competitive technical and economic solutions throughout the project development life-cycle, from screening of technology options through to preparing capital budgets and plant performance commitments for firm-bidding. I led the development of engineering solutions using Air Products' product portfolio of gas generation technologies to support business growth in the on-site gas generation and sale of equipment business sectors. This involved working with all areas of the business including aligning expectations with the commercial teams, coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering teams to develop estimates and bid deliverables, and presenting estimates and approval packages to senior engineering management. Parts of this role were customer-facing, acting as the Air Products technical representative in bid clarification meetings. Air Products was awarded contracts for a number of opportunities for which I led, or in which I had a significant involvement in, the engineering development, which have since been successfully executed as capital projects.

Over an initial 2-year period on Air Products' engineering graduate scheme I gained industrial experience in three different roles. For my first two 8-month rotational assignments I worked for the global operations organisation in Pressure Systems Engineer and Machinery Engineer roles, providing technical support to operating plants in the EMEA region. I then moved into the engineering organisation for my final 8-month assignment as a Mechanical Design Engineer working on projects and proposals to supply electronics semiconductor customers, such as Intel, with ultra-high purity bulk gases delivery systems. Throughout these assignments I gained broad exposure to industrial gas generation, storage and delivery systems and applied engineering theory such as mechanical integrity, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics to the evaluation and design of both operational and new equipment installations.
