Advising ECity Solutions with financial aspects of their proposal to introduce electric vehicles to Spain through an initial pilot project in Barcelona. Building a financial model to assist planning and decision making, and to present to investors to raise initial finance for the project.

Designing a new fee structure for enforcement agents (bailiffs), to resolve market failures and asymmetries in the provision of enforcement services. Design of the fee structure required economic skills to understand the nature of the market failures and how these affect the various stakeholders, accounting skills to perform an activity based costing exercise for enforcement activities, and finance skills to produce a detailed financial model to support the design of a new fee structure. Design of an appropriate fee structure also required understanding complex financial and operational data and statistics.

Senior consultant/ economist with LECG (now FTI Consulting) a global expert services firm providing economic and financial advice in the areas of finance and damages, valuations, intellectual property, transfer pricing, regulation, and competition. Examples projects include:Finance & Damages/ Dispute Consulting - Assisted with the production of expert reports, in relation to disputes arising in a broad range of industries. Performed valuations in the context of a wide variety of disputes, such as lost profits, breach of copyright/ patent, breach of contract, and misrepresentation.Valuations - Performed valuations in a variety of non-dispute contexts: valuation of businesses, brands, licences, intellectual property, and securitisation of assets.Regulation -Worked on the efficiency reviews and price controls for UK regulators Ofcom, Ofgem, and the regulator for Scottish water.Deep theoretical knowledge of the principles of regulation, and experience of applying these principles in project work across all UK regulated industries.Intellectual Property -Particular focus on the on the music industry: working with the expert witness assisting the online copyright tribunal to determine a royalty rate for the sale of digital music; and on projects with other music industry bodies such as the IFPI to tackle the problems of music piracy; and the BPI to consider the licence structure for the public performance of music.Strategy -Assisted an insurance claims handling service provider to assess the UK market, its position within the market, and strategic options for expanding its offering into other areas of personal insurance.Worked with an international celebrity to explore options for enhancing their global clothing brand, to value the licensing of their brand in various global geographic areas, and to structure an offer to buy shares in a manufacturing company in exchange for granting licensing rights.

Worked with the Director of the benchmarking group at Deloitte to develop and launch www.HealthClubBenchmark.com: a web-based benchmarking and market analysis tool for the tourism, hospitality, and leisure sector used by the UK’s leading health and fitness club operators. Worked closely with Managing and Financial Directors of the health club chain operators to identify the industry’s key performance indicators and most useful financial metrics. Designed database structures to store the necessary monthly financial and operational performance data, and reports to display performance and benchmark data. Worked with a team of Deloitte technical experts and outsourced programmers to deliver the web-based functionality of the service, and make it available online to participants. This was an extremely challenging role, exposing me to a broad range of aspects of a major project, from managing communications with an outsourced team of programmers, developing the financial aspect of the service with MD’s and FD’s, and marketing the high profile Deloitte service both directly to industry members, and via national press.

Corporate TaxResponsible for the UK Corporation Tax compliance process for a number of clients in the real estate and travel and tourism sectors. As an Assistant Manager I was responsible for managing junior staff resources and reporting upward to senior managers. The role required an expert knowledge of UK tax laws. Opinions regarding appropriate treatment were required to be developed and supported using reasoned arguments and detailed financial analysis, sufficient to withstand investigation by the Inland Revenue. The role of assistant manager included budgeting, monitoring use of resources, and billing clients.Audit, Assurance & Advisory ServicesManaged small teams, reporting to senior managers, working on statutory audits of regulated utility companies (Mid Kent Water, Network Rail), real estate and leisure (Accor Hotels, Chanel), and oil companies (Perenco, Intrepid Energy). Responsible for audit testing of draft statutory accounts, and disclosures, within tight deadlines. This required an expert knowledge of the firm’s audit approach and its application to all balance sheet and profit and loss items, as well as the ability to manage a team, delegate work, and explain areas of testing to junior team members. Audit testing and controls work required a deep understanding of the client’s financial and operational activities, along with a broad knowledge of the industry.
