About Alexei Janssen
From 2006 to 2023, I worked as the Lead Learning and Performance Coach at the Royal Marines Training Headquarters in Devon, England. The Royal Marines run arguably the most challenging military selection / training course in the world. Its physical and psychological demands are unique, pushing the limits of human capability.Over those 17 years I have coached 1000’s of Royal Marines, Royal Navy Personnel & Special Forces operatives from the most junior to the most senior ranks. Additionally, I designed and delivered learning, psychology, human performance and leadership courses. I was not a Royal Marine and never could have been one. I was an unlikely candidate for this role. I have never been interested in the Military and naturally both detest and fear war; Despite this, I have given these people the best years of my working life for reasons I am still trying to understand. It was a privilege to serve these people. I am no longer employed by the UK Ministry of Defence. I am currently reading and researching for new projects in 2024. In the meantime, my posts on this platform are an attempt to uncover why I stayed with the Royal Marines for so long and most importantly, process and share what these people taught me. Loyal.My approach:- Advocate of thorough debriefs driven by the learner.- Encourage, foster & make safe the justification of decision or action - despite outcome. - Outcomes are probabilistic -processes are not. Analyse process not outcome, thinking not behaviour. - Attempting to teach / explain what you're learning, IS learning. Talking IS working it out.- Listening to the trainer is often just witnessing the trainer becoming more confident. - Sceptical of efforts to move learning online in cases where the unintended consequence removes human interaction & curiosity, standardises cognition & awards competence without depth.- Classrooms only when necessary.- Learning by example, role modelling, demonstration, experimentation, facilitation, discussion. - Eyes measure behaviour. Only enquiry measures thinking.- Trainees watch action, not hear words. Trainees become the people that teach them, not what they teach them - choose them carefully.- Seeking the simplest tools, theories & explanations.- Indicator of success is people utterly determined to want to work in your training bases not escape them.- Innovation comes from the bottom up.
