MedStartr Ventures invests and accelerates early-stage healthcare companies. We utilize crowd-sourcing and crowd-validation with millions of data points feeding our unique algorithmic approach to selecting teams at the brink of massive growth and changing healthcare for patients, care providers and partners. We began investing in 2017 and have helped drive industry-leading growth for our portfolio companies and our fund performance. In our third fund, opening Q4 2024, we will scale the model. Founder And Ceo

Current

New York, Ny, Us

Led the creation and evolution of MedStartr from a crowdfunding site for healthcare innovation to an agency running projects and programs for over 60 clients, and finally to the operating company of our funds running events, contests, sites, communities, and accelerators. What our agency clients (GE, HHS, AMA, Takeda, AHA, Oschner, Aetna, Verizon,...) wanted was to use the wisdom of crowds including patients and people throughout the healthcare system to help select the best startups. They would then pilot, partner and invest in the winners. Our algorithms selected the top teams who would then compete on stage at HIMSS, HLTH, Health 2.0,... where we collected more data from the audience. So far we have driven billions of impressions, millions of visits and over 30 million engagements for over 9,000 healthcare startups in over 1,200 events in 40 cities and online. Our mantra is “We will Connect, Collaborate, and Create the Future of Healthcare Together” creating our global community and mentor network that is passionate about making healthcare work better for everyone. And it works. Startups that scored high went on to become billion-dollar companies (and sometimes acquired in as little as 4 days on the site) showing our system to be ~20 times better at picking companies than your average VC fund. We make the hockey-stick moments happen.Since 2017 we mostly have been running our model and programs for our funds and aligned investors and organizations. In 2020 we opened up a Business Development unit that has driven hundreds of millions in sales for healthcare startups, mostly ones we have funded. Since 2022 we have been running Phoenix (turnaround) programs for our portCos that hit the usual bumps in the road that happen to early and now growth-stage companies with the help of our amazing MedStartr Mentors and global network. In 2025 we will launch the next MedStartr platform. Stay tuned!

H2NYC is one of the world's largest healthcare innovation communitieswith over 7,400 members presently. We run conferences and evening events monthly, mostly in NYC, on the topics of mobile health, design, physician innovations, the patient perspective, health costs, startup contests, challenges, hackathons, hospital innovations, medical devices, and biotech. The community has had over 800 companies present and facilitated the development of one of the most prolific healthcare innovation ecosystems anywhere, helping launch and accelerate hundreds of companies in NYC creating thousands of jobs and billions in value. Out of H2NYC, our company MedStartr was born in 2012. H2NYC, MedStartr, our partners, and now our fund have helped innovative ideas change healthcare faster than ever in a grassroots, bottom-up revolutionary way. We do this by connecting care innovators to the crowd that cares about their creations. For more information, please join the NYC community at www.health20nyc.com, the global one at MedStartr.com/global, follow us on twitter @H2NYC,, watch our events on MedStartr.tv, and learn about our fund at MedStartr.vc or read above. Note this was the first of 218 local chapters of the Health 2.0 Conference company. HIMSS bought Health 2.0 in 2019. We helped recruit, train and promote dozens of chapters and still work with the leaders of many of them as we do events in many cities now but have no present affiliation with HIMSS other than collaborating occasionally. I'd change the name, but that might just confuse our members.

Vice President, Operations

Us

Managed much of a high-end Women's clothing company. A wide departure from my training and goals, but I learned quite a bit, especially about managing people across 14 departments, 4 divisions and three continents. My team and I helped the company grow quickly, improve quality, reduce costs and make it a great place to work and grow. We accomplished many things here but my favorite was the leadership development program that trained over 137 new leaders who have gone on to do great things.

Led the development of the first applications including product design, hardware selection, application development, patent authorship, and prototype development. I left before the company achieved funding and hence missed out on all the fun and much of the real work. Oct 1998 - Apr 1999

Cio, Director Of Product Development

Complete Management Inc.

CMI was a Physician Practice Management company (PPM) which went public in November of 1995. Complete Management acquired outright or managed services for over 230 medical and radiology centers in the tri-state area. In addition to physician practices, CMI also acquired and managed three of the region's largest medical billing companies and the largest PPO in New Jersey at the time. With seventeen acquisitions in three years, CMI was an extremely dynamic company. One of CMI's first acquisitions was my Expert-Systems start-up. After transitioning my team and software to an existing department I became their first CIO. I spent a year in this role, establishing standard procedures, installing dozens of servers, and building a solid team to manage our new WAN. I was then asked to help manage CMI's explosive growth as head of Product Development. From building out new MRI facilities to redesigning 500 person billing companies to building a pervasive terabyte SAS data warehouse, my activities ranged across the entire enterprise. This gave me great exposure to working with Board-level management at a Staff level. One of my roles was in defining and assimilating best practice methodologies across the enterprise. Unfortunately, the PPM industry was decimated in 1998. CMI, like almost every other Public PPM, saw its share price drop 95% in a matter of months. While I did stay through this period to try to aid in the recovery, in the end, I too left, not much richer, but certainly wiser.

Mar 1996 - Oct 1998

Founder & President

Expert-Med

Founded expert medical systems and services company dedicated to the generation of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) letters of medical necessity (LOMNs). Brought product from concept to production in three weeks. The resulting reports achieved a 100% payment rate in the first year, assisting in the recovery of over 12 Million dollars in previously uncollected claims. Expert-Med has changed the way that insurance companies respond to physician claims for payment. Start-up was initially assimilated into Complete Management in 1996. Redeveloped in 2009 for client, still winning 92% of cases.

Jan 1996 - Oct 1996

Cardiovascular Disease Researcher / Pathology Phd Candidate

Wi, Us

Moved with my NYMC mentor to finish my PhD on a novel way to prevent heart disease with an asthma drug. Found a way to prevent the transformation of macrophages to foam cell formation in the vascular intima. Set up lab, received independent funding from the AHA, presented at the 1995 AHA conference on the topic, finished 100-page thesis and fifth publication after initially finding the leukotrienes in the mononuclear atherogenisis model cell culture media using HPLC, confirming in southern and western blots the upregulation of a newly found protein in the same conditions, creating a macrophage differentiation model using flow cytometry, and finally colocalizing the upregulated protein in excised human atherosclerotic vessels with foam cells and macrophages. Also did grand rounds with Clinical Pathology Residents and taught medical school pathology as needed. Unfortunately, my mentor lost his funding and I did not complete the animal studies required to provide final proof for the model despite having AHA funding needed to do so. Much of it is published, but to my knowledge, it has never been completed.

Aug 1994 - Jan 1996

Cancer Researcher / Phd Candidate

Valhalla, Ny, Us

Performed all didactic work for the Experimental Pathology PhD program. Won the GSA Research Forum competition in second year. Was GSA Council Representative in second-year and President-Elect when I left for Wisconsin in my third. Published 3 papers on the newly-discovered p53 gene using all molecular techniques available at the time (PCR, Sequencing, plasmids, SSCPA,...) Also worked with manufacturers to test and optimize the newest ones under the mentorship of Phillip Lazarus, PhD. Helped do the initial research and write NIH R01 that was funded for over 1.1M. Taught a few recitations in Pathology to Medical Students.
