As the assistant manager in Koh Tao's second largest diving equipment wholesaler and retailer I was responsible for the day to day operations of the business, from developing B2B accounts through to retail sales. Part of the position involved conducting training courses in sales, equipment maintenance and regular product presentations. Above this I was responsible for stock ordering, accounts receivable, shop floor merchandising and product pricing.

Due to the nature of the island we identified a hole in the market - all printed Tshirts were ordered off island, which were expensive and had to be ordered in large batched. As a result we opened our own silk-screening company and proceeded to operate with a number of the large dive schools on the island, the Koh Tao Pub Crawl, who required 200+ shirts every 2 days, and a number of other businesses. Sold due to the arrival of my son.

I took over the lease for a newly built hotel in a popular location, and trained a team of 6 staff. We had a 23 rooms and increased our revenues through ticket sales for guided tours, scuba diving, ferry trips and nationwide travel. Owners refused to extend the lease after the first 3 years due to the ongoing success.

As the head instructor at this busy dive school I was responsible for QC as well as professional level training. I assisted with all equipment maintenance, staff training and daily rostas.

I was responsible for the complete operations of a busy scuba diving school based on Ko Lipe, Thailand, from training the 17 staff through to equipment maintenance, trip scheduling, food requests and preparation and more. This was made trickier and the days longer by the distinct lack of electric on this island at this point in time - we usually received 4 hours of electric between 6pm and 10pm, which meant that all tank filling etc had to be completed during this time.

On Koh Lipe I was quickly appointed to the manager at this busy dive store. During my time there I created a contract with a tour group in Langkawi, Malaysia, to bring people for day charters to us. This worked out to be so successful that Thailand installed an immigration office on the island of Koh Lipe to be able to deal with the mass influx of tourism we had generated. Working in the Home and Leisure department as a a sales assistant and shop floor merchandiser was a fantastic experience. Through continued training and development we regularly outperformed our sales targets and had a well bonded, focused team. I often worked an evening shift, followed by a complete night shift in order to make sure the shelves were replenished ready for the next day's trade. I was recommended to join for management training but had set my mind on a GAP year.

Essentially the site manager, I was responsible for staff recruitment, training and development, as well as a number of safety related issues. In addition I helped as site engineer, assembling a number of the "traps" and operating a number of others.
