About Alexander Froebel

I am a PhD Candidate at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) set to earn my PhD in Physical Chemistry in March 2023. My PhD research focus is designing, building and optimizing novel frequency comb terahertz spectroscopy instrumentation for studying gas phase molecules in a vacuum chamber. I am passionate about developing Python interfacing for automation of laboratory hardware, data collection and analysis, as well as developing data collection and data analysis techniques for processing signals. I earned my B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Nevada, Reno where I became interested in physical chemistry while performing research in a organic physical chemistry, involving organic synthesis and various spectroscopic techniques. During my research years at UNR I was fortunate enough to gain years of laboratory experience performing synthesis and spectroscopy.My other interests include teaching and mentoring bilingual underprivileged youth in local schools.

    Worked in Dr. Geoffrey Blake’s spectroscopy laboratory at Caltech.• Thesis: “Interleaved Terahertz Frequency Comb Spectroscopy of Gas Phase Molecules”• Built and developed a terahertz frequency comb spectrometer for use with gas-phase samples in a vacuum chamber. Improvements include sensitivity, spectral coverage, duty cycle.• Gained familiarity with lasers and optics handling and maintenance, including work inside a Titanium:Sapphire laser cavity.• Constructed and utilized various electronic circuits, including a microwave phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit, a stepper motor controller, direct digital synthesis (DDS) boards, etc.• Pioneered data collection and Fourier analysis techniques to achieve quantitative determination of relative line intensities, including analysis of sources of spectral noise in terahertz frequency combs and cepstral analysis.• Developed Python programs for interfacing with laboratory hardware, automation, data collection with an FPGA card, and analysis. • Upcoming Publications: “Terahertz Frequency Comb Spectroscopy of Methanol” (first author), “No-Moving-Parts linear Terahertz TDS systems using plasmonic emitters” (contributing author)
