As an emergency nurse I care for individuals across the lifespan in a variety of settings. Emergency nurses must work effectively in a demanding, fast-paced and often stressful environment. Emergency nurses must have the capacity to care for the full spectrum of physical, psychological and social health problems within their community. I must also able to develop a rapport with individuals from all age groups and socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, in time-critical situations and often at a time when these individuals are at their most vulnerable. In any setting, as an emergency nurse I must integrate critical thinking skills and evidence-based knowledge into my practice. Unique to the emergency nursing practice is the variety of illnesses and injuries from all ages and populations that require emergency care. Providing safe quality care requires that I have an expertise in triage and prioritization, intervention and stabilization, resuscitation, crisis intervention, and emergency preparedness.
