Commanded up to 40 soldiers within barracks, managing their reports, training and careers whilst ensuring that both the needs of the individual and the needs to the Regiment are met. As a Lieutenant, I was employed as a Command Post Officer, responsible for control and communications during the firing of the Battery's Guns on exercise. I then progressed to Gun Position Officer, gaining responsibility for the command and control of all aspects of the Gun Position. As a Captain, I was employed as a Joint Tactical Air Controller, responsible for the timely and accurate delivery of air-delivered munitions and aerial surveillance in response to a dynamically changing situation on the ground, whilst ensuring the safety of both air assets under my control and friendly forces on the ground. I deployed to Afghanistan in this capacity.

The RMAS Commissioning Course is designed to foster and develop leadership skills, teamwork skills, physical ability and an ability to work under intense pressure in both mentally and physically demanding conditions. It is set over the course of a year, and includes an academic element as well as field exercises that challenge Officer Cadets in a variety of scenarios, from traditional warfare to counter-insurgency and riot training.
