My name is Alex Heckel, I am a senior at the University of Washington majoring in Aeronautics and Astronautics with a focus on aerospace systems and structures. I will be graduating in June 2023. I am a member of the University’s Society for Advance Rocket Propulsion (SARP) that seeks to build the university’s first 12-inch diameter rocket with a regeneratively cooled engine and an altitude goal of 100,000 feet. Within my role as a Structures sub team member, I have aided in the design of the fins for the new 12-inch rocket as well as a modular fin can with the ability to swap fins quickly and easily. I lead a small team within the Fins sub-section that seeks to optimize fin geometry and thickness to withstand the stresses of supersonic flight. I also work closely with other sub-teams to exchange up-to-date designs, figures, and requirements. I am currently in a systems role within my pre-capstone class and will be in a systems role in the upcoming Boeing sponsored cargo freighter capstone. The pre-capstone focuses primarily on writing documentation, defining requirements, and requirement verification. The full capstone will be a larger project where I will gain further systems experience with the help of mentors from Boeing.
