Having worked for a Carpentry sub-contractor for a number of years I was keen to explore another avenue to help broaden my knowledge of an additional trade within the industry. I feel that working from utilities and civil works through to the carpentry finishing trade has provided me with solid understanding of the industry.My roles and responsibilities within the company are as follows:• Tendering and producing a written and numeric quotation based on BoQ, drawings and specifications provided, consisting of New Business schemes and Frame Work Contractor Schemes.• Populating the cost and value sheets (per scheme, per week) in order to capture the labour, plant and material costs to allow the accounts department to invoice all completed works.• Following the appointment of a scheme I am responsible for agreeing and costing all early warnings/variations and ensuring that all additional works are carried out in accordance with the contract.• Capturing weekly labour and material splits in order to allow myself and the Senior Quantity Surveyor to do the monthly reconciliations.• Consulting with Highways Agencies to arrange road closures and/or diversions should they be applicable.

Following my graduation from University I began working for AJC Carpentry Southern Limited as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, within 18 months I was promoted to the role of Quantity Surveyor. Working as part of a small team, responsible for over 18 live sites, the majority of which are residential with a mixture of new build and refurbishments.My roles and responsibilities within the company are as follows:• Tendering and producing a written and numeric quotation based on drawings and specifications provided. Per calendar month I am required to tender in excess of £1,000,000.00. This total can be made up of any number for projects depending on their size and value.• Per calendar year I am expected to procure a set amount of work for the company. Last year (April 2013–April 2014) my personal target was £3,250,000.00, which I was successful in securing.• During the tender process I liaise closely with our clients to ensure all the correct items have been accounted for. I believe that frequent correspondence with Surveyors/Site Agents not only makes the tendering process for more accurate but also allows you to develop working relationships with key clients which will benefit your current projects and look to put you in good stead for forthcoming projects.• Following the procurement of a project I will then produce all relevant RAMs for that site. (Method statement, Abbreviated method statement, Risk Assessment Form and COSSH statement).• Once sites are up and running I am responsible for calculating and agreeing all variations. I am also accountable for the cash flow of that site and must make sure that all sites are meeting their set profit targets.• When a project is finishing I will liaise with a member of our accounts department to calculate and produce a final account statement. I will then attend a final account meeting with the relevant surveyor and close all outstanding monies on that site.

Work placement I obtained during summer vacations before and during my time at university. Responsibilities:•Planning and surveying forthcoming land sites (contours•Plotting and measuring sites using ‘Earthworks' programme•Aiding the company surveyors produce their tenders•Cross checking invoices for any underpayments.

Placement during the Easter break during my final year of 6th form. Responsibilities:•Undertaking the task of designing a facility within a specific criteria•Producing a set of hand drawings illustrating my design (all to scale)•Produce a scope of works for the proposed project, explaining all the design choices.
