When I started, machine learning was only used for computer vision and it was unclear if it could be generally applied to other problems. I was part of a great team that developed PointPillars (https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.05784), the first real time end to end learned algorithm for object detection. PointPillars became the state of the art lidar object detection algorithm for several years. We also released nuScenes https://www.nuscenes.org/, the first dataset from an actual self driving car.
