I study the adsorption mechanism of N-Heterocylcic Carbenes (NHC) on noble metal surfaces using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). By combining experimental observations of Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAM) with first-principles theory, we can further the design of a surfactant molecules for use in nanoparticle encapsulation and surface functionalization.
