I always knew that I would go into the healthcare field, being that my father was a doctor and my mother is a Register Nurse. I first knew that I wanted to work with children in high school when I volunteered for YMCA Reads, a program sponsored by the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. I enjoyed every aspect of the program, teaching the children, observing how quickly they learn, but also how much they enjoyed to play and their limitless energy. Unfortunately as we age, we lose that energy and become more prone to partaking in sedentary activities. During my years at Rutgers University majoring in Exercise Science, I have learned all the benefits of exercise from social, to mental, and of course physical; therefore, when I also learn about the increasing obesity rate in children and adolescents it is truly disheartening. Some of my best and most confident moments were playing sports, whether on a team or with friends, and less children are getting to experience that. My short-term goal is to obtain my Masters in Athletic Training. Currently, I am a youth sport Coach at the YMCA, and my favorite part about it is that I am able to instill weight management into adolescents. My long- term goal is to work with a partner in opening our own chain of recreational centers focused on children and fighting Metabolic Syndrome. Our facilities would be working with the government in helping families afford it, and keeping the activities fun and productive. My career as an athletic trainer would provide the necessary networking to accomplish my goal, as well as, content with my occupation.I appreciate that I am able to utilize what I’ve learned in my classes to my current position. The fact that my current job is fulfilling means I know I made the right choice. I always look forward in being able to work in my field and develop innate skills that will benefit me in my future career, and also affecting others in a positive way.
