My name is Alexis Smith and I am a second year Mechanical Engineering Major at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I am currently on track to graduate in May 2027 with a BS and ME in Mechanical Engineering. While at RIT I have maintained a GPA of 3.8/4.0 and have been on the Dean's List 3 out of my 4 semesters completed here.At the beginning of my second semester here, I joined RIT Launch Initiative, a multidisciplinary club dedicated to designing, manufacturing, and launching high-powered rockets. The sub-team I joined was made up of first years working towards building a high powered Level 2 rocket. Our rocket successfully launched in November of 2023, reaching an apogee of over 3,000 feet. Through this, I gained experience in Fusion360, OpenRocket, and various manufacturing tools such as lathes, CNC mills, and laser cutting. Also in November of 2023, I launched my own Level 1 high powered rocket and acheiving my L1 certification through the National Association of Rocketry (NAR).With only having been on the team for 3 months, I was elected to become Secretary of Launch Initiative for the 2023-2024 academic year where I managed responsibilities such as organizing social events and managing club membership. I now serve as the Director of Sponsorships for the 2024-2025 academic year where I will be responsible for managing and obtaining the team sponsorships. Additionally at the start of my second year, I joined the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) team. I am an active member of the structures sub team and am leading the research and development of placing strain gauges on a bulkhead of the rocket to measure snatch force.
