About Alexis Atkinson
I am a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor's degree in Art History (2022). I am currently working as a preschool teacher-researcher for Sabot School. My previous experience includes working as a museum technician for The Montpelier Foundation, a museum technician and visitor services associate at The Valentine, and a gallery associate at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.In 2020, I earned my Associate's degree in Liberal Arts focused in art history at John Tyler Community College. I also received a Fine Arts Certificate. While attending John Tyler I became a member of Phi Theta Kappa's Honor Society in John Tyler's Beta Omicron Omicron Chapter with my making of the Honor's List for three semesters and Dean's List one semester. I was also nominated for the ALL-USA Coca-Cola Scholarship, leading to me becoming a member of the ALL-Virginia Academic Team. I was also one of the few selected to represent my school at the General Assembly this past spring. There we spoke with several elected officials, including Governor Ralph Northam, about the importance and opportunities community colleges have to offer. I also participated in the Mellon Pathways to VCU Grant offered by John Tyler and J. Sargent Reynold's colleges. There I participated in several activities, events, and discussions revolving around the importance of the Humanities and Arts in college settings while also offering an easier transition to the four year university, VCU.In the spring of 2022, I earned my Bachelor's degree in Art History at Virginia Commonwealth University. There, I participated in VCU's Cabell Library Undergraduate Advisory Committee from 2020-2021, volunteering, creating resources, and collaborating on the student newsletter. I participated in the VCU Running Club, making it to nationals (2022). I was a member of the Art History Graduate Student Association as a part of my attempted participation in the Accelerated Masters program. During my time, we had a career development opportunity in New York City, visiting various museums across the city. I continued participation in the Mellon Pathways program as a peer mentor, to help prepare students for life after transferring to VCU.I am currently pursuing a Certificate in Museum Management with the Virginia Association of Museums.I plan to become an art curator who is able to incorporate a more educational, narrative, and immersive gallery experience for visitors. In the meantime, I hope to explore other areas in the museum world like exhibition design, conservation, collections and education.
