I was writing in northern Iraq when the Islamic State captured Mosul. In the months that followed, I learned how they dehumanize: by diminishing those with whom they disagree to a single identity, "the Other."Hoping to curb the practice in my own little corner, I returned to Los Angeles to teach high school students to, amid great diversity, practice intelligent empathy and care for one another. More often than not, that meant teaching them to seek and share multiple stories. Next, I studied data journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism and reported for the Columbia Missourian. These days, I'm a health reporter in North Texas. My journalism is trauma-informed, and I work to complicate the narratives people have about each other and about health.
