The competitive residency is sponsored by The University of Iowa's public health and policy program and is based out of Kameda. The resident is involved in touring throughout Japan with the goal of understanding aspects of Japan's single payer health system, which is considered one of the best in the world. In order to do this, the residency is set up to experience the Japanese continuum of care including Tokyo's public health department, Tokyo's largest hospitals, Japanese mental health and skilled nursing facilities. My summer project focused on single payer systems and international disaster preparedness-particularly due to the high number of earthquakes and typhoons experienced in Japan.
