I founded a website for writers called The Write Life in 2013, then grew it over the next eight years, primarily as a side project. I sold the business in March 2021.The business was bootstrapped. We cultivated a devoted community of readers, leaning on quality content and community-building strategies to grow the site to half a million page views each month. The site became known as one of the premiere online resources for writers.

I led the content division at The Penny Hoarder, which in 2020 sold to public company Sykes Enterprises. The company was an innovative startup, bootstrapped and profitable, and my job was help us stay ahead in the media industry. In addition to overseeing our teams of writers, editors, photographers, videographers and designers, I worked alongside our founder to scale the company from 3 to 100+ employees, building our startup infrastructure. We ranked on the Inc. 500 list as the fastest-growing media company in 2016 and 2017, and we're one of the largest personal finance websites in the world.

I grew the content and marketing operations for The Penny Hoarder, scaling what began as a one-man personal finance blog into the fastest-growing private media company in the country. We offer interesting advice on how to earn and save money, helping people put more money in the bank.I joined The Penny Hoarder as the third employee in 2015, when my blog-management agency, Socialexis, was acquired by the company. I worked alongside the founder to recruit, train and manage our editors, writers and marketing team, developing and executing a content strategy that grew our readership to 25 million readers each month.

I founded this blog-management company and grew it for five years, until we were acquired by Taylor Media (The Penny Hoarder).We managed all aspects of blogs for our clients, from developing content strategy, recruiting writers, editing, optimizing for SEO and publishing.Our clients included popular publications The Penny Hoarder (http://thepennyhoarder.com) and Brazen Careerist (http://brazencareerist.com/blog), as well as startup Eone Timepieces (http://eone-time.com/blog).

I reported on job-search strategies and hiring trends. I also managed and edited a team of freelance bloggers. I grew our Careers Twitter feed and Facebook following from zero, and oversaw and executed our annual Best Careers project.

Traveled through French-speaking Africa for six months, freelancing for various publications, including The Christian Science Monitor, the Albany Times Union, the Houston Chronicle and the Colby Magazine. Developed a travel blog that gained 50,000 hits in six months.After my return home, I wrote a travel memoir about backpacking solo through Africa.
