COMMUNITY SURVEY DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS – Developed community survey to gather data on resident needs and perception of current and proposed programs – Designed community survey to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Created separate survey for adults and created separate survey for youth. Created user-friendly survey – Refined and edited the survey to ask both quantitative and qualitative questions. Collected quantitative data such as scales, yes/no and multiple choice. Generated analysis of the qualitative data and identified and coded the number of similar responses. Transformed the qualitative data (open-ended responses) into quantitative data by recoding the qualitative data. – Entered, cleaned and coded data into SPSS database for analysis. Analyzed results using SPSS. – Generated results by creating multiple data on SPSS. My dissertation entitled “Boundary Maintenance in Qatar: Interpretation of Domination, Segregation and Subordination” explored the interaction of expatriates in Qatar and their perception of their subordination. Physical control of expatriates occurs through the Gulf practice of sponsorship (The Kafeel System) and local cultural and Islamic related controls intertwined with the Arab Code of Honor. In conducting this research I systematically collected complex qualitative and quantitative data using survey instruments and ethnographic interviews.Labor portion of Study: Conducted 129 interviews with various ethnic and occupational groupings of domestic workers, skilled laborers, semi-skilled laborers, professionals, housewives and second-generation expatriate students. More specifically, it includes interviews with Indonesian and Filipina domestic workers, Sri Lankan and Indian Unskilled laborers, Iranian laborers, and Ghanaian semi-skilled workers. I also interviewed 12 embassy officials at 8 different embassies whom gave me background information on their populations. These embassies were: India, Sudan, Egypt, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Yemen and Indonesia. Embassy representatives spoke to me in detail regarding specific cases of their nationals who came to the embassy for help. I also interviewed judges at the Shariah Courts. Gender portion of Study: Participant observation of Somalian, Eritrean, Sudanese, Pakistani, Yemeni, (non-Gulf citizens) and Omani (Gulf Citizens) living in the sik-al-talibat (ladies hostel) at the University, where I also lived. It includes second-generation non-nationals (Somalian, Sudani and Eritrean) whom grew up in other Gulf countries, and students whom grew up in Qatar (Pakistani and Syrian). An in-depth ethnographic case study often followed the semi-structured interview survey which I was able to conduct individually or in focus groups. The HIT is an ad-hoc committee created by the Florida Department of Community Affairs to support hurricane mitigation by encouraging industry and government to work together to offer a broad range of incentives for homeowners to choose to protect their residences against natural hazards. My responsibilities, as Graduate Research Assistant, included facilitation of the meetings, maintenance of the member database, correspondence and transcription of taped recordings of each meeting. By June 22, 1999, the team had created a total of 10 incentives to encourage homeowners to mitigate their homes from natural disasters. In July 1, 1999, the proposed incentives from each team were compiled and submitted to the Department of Community Affairs for their approval and implementation of the proposed action plan. I worked on a team of representatives from associations and organizations belonging to the insurance, banking, mortgage and building industries, as well as local and state governments to create incentives to encourage homeowners to mitigate their homes from natural disasters. The document produced is entitled “First Report of the Homeowner’s Incentive Team” and was prepared for the Florida Department of Community Affairs, June 1999. We defined problems and developed solutions for encouraging hurricane mitigation in the State of Florida.
