My thesis project focuses on the role of associated bacteria that are physically attached to cyanobacterial colonies - also defined as their microbiome - in the dynamics of harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCB) in freshwater lakes. Understanding their contribution to the growth of various bloom-forming cyanobacterial genera will improve our ability to predict and manage HCB. this PhD project aims to examine the microbial composition of cyanobacteria and explore how these organisms co-evolved. We will first integrate observations from natural environments and single-colony sequencing with environmental metagenomes to characterize the genomic diversity of dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria and their associated bacteria across various freshwater systems worldwide and over time. We will then evaluate evidence for phylosymbiosis and identify functional complementarity through genome scale metabolic models. Finally, by combining microfluidics and gene expression quantification, we will investigate the mechanisms behind multispecies colony formation and the interactions within these assemblages.

Au cours de ce stage de 3 mois, j'ai eu l'opportunité d'approfondir mon expérience et mes connaissances du métier d'aquariologiste. J'ai été chargé des mesures des paramètres physico-chimiques de tous les bacs et ce, tous les jours. J'ai aussi été initié aux cultures de nauplies d'artémias et de rotifères. J'ai aussi du effectuer des présentations devant des publics très variés, ce qui a développé mon éloquence.
