About Dr Alexis Palfreyman

With an interdisciplinary background, I bridge research and practice in maternal and mental health, suicidology, violence, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. I'm the Founder and co-Director of the Centre for Impact on Violence and Health (CIVAH), driving research, evaluation and implementation science across global settings. I've had the privilege of working with and for a range of health research and programmatic initiatives alongside practitioners, policymakers, national/global health bodies, scholars and community members in the UK, South(east) and Central Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. My work chiefly aims to understand health needs and behaviour, service access and delivery for under-supported populations. I hold a PhD in Demography and Population Studies from the LSE and two master's degrees in Maternal and Child Health (UCL) and Social Research Methods (LSE). My multi-method doctoral research explores trajectories of self-directed violence amongst women and girls in a high-burden, low-resource South Asian context. With a sub-focus on perinatal mental health and self-harm in the perinatal period, I've developed the world's first stage-based model (The Pain Pathway) on why women and girls end up choosing and using self-harm, including during pregnancy and the postnatal window.
