About Dr Alexis Palfreyman
With an interdisciplinary background, I bridge research and practice in maternal and mental health, suicidology, violence, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. I'm the Founder and co-Director of the Centre for Impact on Violence and Health (CIVAH), driving research, evaluation and implementation science across global settings. I've had the privilege of working with and for a range of health research and programmatic initiatives alongside practitioners, policymakers, national/global health bodies, scholars and community members in the UK, South(east) and Central Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. My work chiefly aims to understand health needs and behaviour, service access and delivery for under-supported populations. I hold a PhD in Demography and Population Studies from the LSE and two master's degrees in Maternal and Child Health (UCL) and Social Research Methods (LSE). Phd Demography And Population Studies
My multi-method doctoral research explores trajectories of self-directed violence amongst women and girls in a high-burden, low-resource South Asian context. With a sub-focus on perinatal mental health and self-harm in the perinatal period, I've developed the world's first stage-based model (The Pain Pathway) on why women and girls end up choosing and using self-harm, including during pregnancy and the postnatal window.
