I was selected onto the NHS’s Scientist Training Programme (STP) in the field of Cardiac Physiology. This programme is very competitive with 20 applicants per position. I commenced my journey on the STP in September 2020, this was during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was putting very high demands on NHS staff at the time. My experience whilst working at the hospital on this programme has proved invaluable. During my 2 years working I was able to gain experience in many departments and disciplines. I gained experience working within the Accident & Emergency Department, Cardiology Department, Vascular Laboratory, Respiratory & Sleep Laboratory, and Intensive Therapy Unit amongst others. Each different discipline and department have provided unique learning experiences. Having to interact and communicate with doctors, nurses, surgeons, physiologists, health care assistants and patients provides many challenges. I have also had experience in the use of numerous biotechnological equipment through my time at the hospital. Such equipment includes ultrasound machines, x-ray machines, magnetic resonance imaging machines, and microbiological laboratory equipment. In total, the 2 years working in a hospital has allowed me to gain a broad medical knowledge of many different aspects of clinical biology. It has also provided me with insight into hospital logistics and management. This knowledge will provide essential in my future endeavours. I spent two years on this course before leaving to pursue other interests. Perhaps, the most valuable learning experience from my time here was the ability to remain calm and calculated when making decisions under pressure, which was heightened during the pandemic.
