Profile bio

About Alex Kauffmann

For much of the last decade I've led hybrid engineering, prototyping, and design teams focused on interactions with machines from the point of view of someone who doesn't particularly relish interacting with machines and software. Currently, I'm freelancing AI prototyping work, taking EE and CS classes a City Colltege, getting language, vision, and audio models running on embedded hardware to see if there's a there there, and very slowly pursuing conversations about R+D opportunities.

Listed skills include User Experience, Impassioned Argument, Storytelling, Interaction Design, and 11 others.

Ai Consultant

Various Film And Tv Projects, Including M3Gan And M3Gan 2.0

A producer at Blumhouse asked if I'd be willing to consult on a killer robot movie he was working on and I said sure. I met and corresponded with the director on all sorts of questions related to AI and its terminology and gave extensive notes on scripts and movie cuts. M3gan ended up being a much bigger hit than I think anyone had anticipated, so I'm reprising my role on the sequel and have since consulted on several other AI-related film and TV projects. I also got a shout out on the New York Times's Hard Fork podcast! (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/13/podcasts/hard-fork-chatgpt-teachers-gen-z-cameras-m3gan.html @ 52:26)

Research areas of current interest: 6DoF EM tracking, ultrasound, magic wands, machine learning + radio protocols, body area networks, computer vision, ad hoc networking, and wearable gesture detection. And always making things out of cardboard.

Principal user advocate on most of [x]’s early projects, where I worked on making super secret future things fun and beautiful — in addition to useful, efficient, and irresistible to everyday folks.I was the first designer on what later became Google Glass, prototyping dozens of head-mounted interactions using inertial sensors, brain wave interfaces, microcontrollers, projectors, film, motion, and graphics software, as well as working on Goggles, early interfaces for the self-driving car, and some as yet undisclosed projects.

?What If! (Shanghai)

I developed new products, services, and brands for Philips, Pepsi, Moët Hennessy, Diageo, Unilever, a Chinese-American NGO, and SK Telecom. But wait, there's more.I also delivered against significant billing targets by identifying market opportunities, courting potential clients, creating pitches and writing proposals, scoping project briefs and agreeing deliverables, planning and executing 4-to-12-week projects, managing client relationships and project teams, planning and facilitating idea generation sessions and consumer groups, making creative strategic recommendations, crafting and delivering final output to senior executives, and following up on project outcomes. But wait, there's more.I also managed the Shanghai office’s creative department.
