Travel And StudyIndependent Jan 2006 - Mar 2008WorldwideI became interested in renewable energy in the fall of 2005 and decided to make a major career change. I left my job in the elevator industry so that I could focus completely on becoming a solar energy professional. The first step was to enroll in general science classes at a local college to cover some gaps I had in my undergraduate degree. I then took a position as a Materials Tester with Applied GeoScience in the Chicagoland for field engineering experience. I supervised the installation of concrete for sidewalks, roads, and building foundations; acted as a Quality Control tester for citywide sidewalk installation project; conducted soil stability analysis for residential caisson installations; and performed lab strength tests of concrete test cylinders to ensure specification compliance. In the summer of 2006, my wife and I packed our bags and visited a few countries that we've always wanted to see. After touring some places in the US, we went to Mexico, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Nepal, and finally Turkey. I had my first solar heated shower in the Himalayas! It was a fabulous trip and I'm glad we seized the opportunity to do it when we had the chance. Traveling through remote and impoverished parts of the world was both exotic and completely familiar at times but always a tremendous experience that I'll continue to draw on for the rest of my life.Upon returning to the US in July of 2007, I resumed formal class and field work in solar energy systems with Solar Energy International and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association. During the next 10 months, I worked for the City of Madison, Wisconsin as a Field Engineering Assistant serving as a supervisor of public works projects including street & sidewalk construction and sewer installation & repair. I left Madison in March 2008 to start my own solar installation and consulting company in Chicago.
