Alex has tutored in both Bachelor and Masters Architectural Design Studios at the University of South Australia.
The Jack Hobbs McConnell Travelling Fellowship was established in 2007 following a bequest from the estate of the late South Australian architectural figure Jack Hobbs McConnell. The Fellowship aims to enable promising young designers, who might ultimately practice in South Australia, to undertake an independent program of research or course of further study in Architecture, most likely overseas.Alex was selected as the 2016 recipient of the Fellowship, which allowed Alex to travel overseas to explore some of Europe’s most creative cities, coinciding with several prominent architectural festivals: such as the London Festival of Architecture, and the Venice Architecture Biennale. His travels explored what makes a ‘creative city’, and what capacity architecture has to foster, inspire, or celebrate creativity within an urban environment. These questions are part of a growing discussion in Adelaide, Australia, surrounding what the city could be, and how to make Adelaide a more creative, vibrant, and innovative place to live. On his return, Alex initiated the "Adelaide Creative Community Hub": an open ideas architectural competition run in partnership with competition organiser Bee Breeders, and the SA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects. The competition attracted over 100 entries internationally, and the shortlisted entries were exhibited during the 2017 Festival of Architecture and Design in Adelaide.
