About Alex Leavitt, Phd

I'm a research leader and expert in global trust & safety, with a proven, impactful product & policy track record of creating strategy, research, and implementation of work on digital harm insights, reduction, & interventions. I hold a PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California. To see my product/policy portfolio and publications, please visit my website: http://alexleavitt.netCurrently, I'm a principal researcher at Roblox, where I lead the company's research work on Trust & Safety. Before that, I was a researcher at Meta, where I led international research on trust & safety problems across the company (such as misinformation, social conflict, crisis response, and other social issue topics; see below for details) for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. My research expertise is broadly mixed-methods, ranging from international ethnographic fieldwork to surveys, experiments, network analysis, and computational data analysis (using R, SQL, and Python). Prior to industry work, at the University of Southern California, I studied networked technology and online culture, with a special focus on user-generated content sites and online collaboration (on social media platforms and in online video games). Various projects used data from Facebook, Instagram, reddit, Twitter, EVE Online, Tumblr, Minecraft, YouTube, League of Legends, Foursquare, and more. In 2016, I was named one of Pacific Standard's 30 Top Thinkers Under 30.
