About Alex Renner

My experiences include graduate research work in rapid prototyping and manufacturing. I am capable of operating CNC machines. I am capable of doing some C++ programming. I can operate Solidworks, Pro Engineering, some Unigraphics, some CATIA.I'd like to continue to work with composites materials. I'd like to leverage my manufacturing experience for the design of composite parts. I'm also open to getting further into software systems implementation and software development.     I work at the Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC) at Iowa State. I do some software development and am researching training for consumer-level additive manufacturing systems. I work daily with 3 Fused Filament Fabrication 3D printers. I am very hands on, performing maintenance on the machines myself in order to identify common errors that occur due to the machine and print settings. I have tested my training with users from a variety of disciplines, especially those from the Human Computer Interaction graduate program. I have also printed many parts for graduate research devices including Augmented Reality and Head Mounted Displays.

    I work on many projects related to the manufacture of composite parts. I have done of a number of different jobs within my first year working for RPM. I've learned many of the details of how carbon fiber parts are manufactured. I've already been able to do some FEA analysis for the company. I've also run mechanical property tests per ASTM specifications. I've modified and manipulated CAD models using Solidworks. I also have learned to use a FARO portable coordinate measuring machine.

    I worked in a Rapid Prototyping (RP) and Rapid Manufacturing research laboratory under the Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Dept. under Dr. Matt Frank. I was part of a team that developed a process called "CNC-RP". CNC-RP essentially takes a CNC machine and turns it into an RP machine using the systems we developed.
