My current focus and passion: Conventional biomechanical measures lack the diagnostic specificity necessary for the effective biomechanical phenotyping and early-onset detection of most, if not all degenerative bone, joint and neuromuscular diseases. Academic medicine's foundation is built on symptom detection for medical diagnosis and intervention-a reactionary approach some call "defense". We envision a world of medical "offense", developing anticipatory approaches with medical interdiction capabilities capable of destroying disease assets before they can be deployed in force.In 2004, while still in college, I co-developed real-time wearable walking speed sensors with bio-feedback for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where I was subsequently hired. My years at NIH were blessed with opportunities to work not only "for", but "with" outstanding scientists and clinicians committed to finding fundamentally-creative discoveries to protect and improve human life. Projects included the development of novel instrumented treadmills, body-weight support systems, advanced motion capture techniques for 3D musculoskeletal movement analysis-the vanguard of NIH's intramural mission to dramatically improve rehabilitation outcomes.My Doctoral studies investigated how nature managed to design a human wheel with only two spokes that we call walking. Bio-inspired designs will drive the first generation of truly personalized orthotics and prosthetics. This work in conjunction with my fellow colleagues forms the core technology behind Intelligent Digital Manufacturing, a University of Delaware licensed spinoff dedicated to innovations that transform healthcare delivery for patients, providers, payers and other allied health stakeholders. I come alive when creating value, disrupting the status-quo and building community "centric" public-private partnerships--all through innovation. Equipping and inspiring the next generation to do the same and better will make me whole.
