As part of the Software Engineering Graduate Scheme, I am working for six months each in four different teams over the first two years of my time at the BBC.In my current team, I am working on the four CBeebies mobile apps: Playtime Island, Little Learners, Storytime, and Get Creative. These apps are built using React, HTML, CSS, Capacitor, Swift, and Kotlin.In my second team, I worked on the BBC Sounds iOS app using Swift. This app has around 1 million weekly users and is consistently in the top 10 most downloaded free music apps in the Apple App Store. I helped to improve performance and implement experiments for new features. An interesting project I was involved with was converting the player from old UIKit code into SwiftUI, which is part of a wider shift to the new framework throughout the app.In my first team, I worked on maintaining and developing the APIs and infrastructure that power most of the BBC's core websites and apps. This primarily utilised JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, and AWS. With more than 1.5 million requests to the core API every minute, the worked I was involved with focussed on reducing response times and making the systems more robust under heavy load. I particular enjoyed conceptualising and building an automatic circuit breaker to mitigate issues when upstream services go down.
