Middle School Reading Teacher
KIPP St. Louis is a network of world class public schools which seek to provide historically under-served children with a rigorous academic and character education. At KIPP Triumph, I design lesson plans with annotated exemplars for each objective. My strong behavior management practice enables me to monitor students' work closely during independent practice and give in-the-moment feedback. I administer daily exit tickets to assess mastery of objectives and plan re-teaches after assessment. I also work closely with parents and resource teachers to ensure each student's needs are being met, including designing daily modified work. A coach also observes and gives me feedback weekly and I implement action steps immediately. I am currently focusing on tightening my curriculum to improve student performance on benchmark tests, as well as on the end-of-course assessment, and am consistently pushing to find better ways of delivering instruction and investing students.
Course Leader
As Course Leader, I design all curriculum for fifth grade reading in the KIPP St Louis region, ensuring every lesson plan objective aligns to what students need to be able to know and do on each CCSS/MLS. I create exemplar answers for each lesson plan, including those for each scaffolded and culminating text-dependent question. I regularly implement feedback from the Director of Middle School Curriculum.
Teaching Fellow
KIPP St. Louis is a network of world class public schools which seek to provide historically under-served children with a rigorous academic and character education. At KIPP Inspire, I observed and collaborated with experienced reading teachers. I worked with small groups of 6th-grade students who were close to being proficient on benchmark tests in an effort to boost these students to proficiency. All of these students showed growth from unit to unit and many of them did succeed in becoming proficient on the benchmark exams.I was observed by and met weekly with the Chief Academic Officer of KIPP St. Louis to discuss my performance, immediately putting into place any action steps we came up with. I learned and began to master important skills, such as reading strategies and behavior management. I put many reading strategies as well as the behavior management cycle to work in the small groups I pulled out, seeing changes in academics as well as behavior.I also taught a class of over 25 gifted 8th graders in order to prepare them to take the 9th grade End-of-Course Assessment. 96% of these students scored proficient or advanced on this test.
