When I sold my agency in 2011 to Saatchi, I told myself I'd never go down the road of starting up an independent shop again. So in 2015 I did just that. What a ride. Based in Canada. One time office in San Francisco but, well, Covid. Possibly hubris. Work across global accounts. Surrounded by smart and creative people. Lexus, NBA, Tabasco, Maserati, Red Cross. Oh, man.

Raised my hand and got picked as a member of the CMA AI Working group to advise the Canadian Federal Government in the drafting of the upcoming AIDA legislation. The world is changing and I wanted to be part of that change so here I am. Important words to follow:On June 15, 2022 the Canadian Federal Government tabled the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), Canada’s first-ever proposal to regulate the use of AI. The AIDA aims to ensure “high-impact” AI systems are developed in a way that identifies, assesses and mitigates the risk of harm and bias. It also prohibits conduct concerning AI systems that may result in serious harm to individuals or their interests, and creates an AI and Data Commissioner to monitor compliance and issue audits. The AIDA proposes a general framework, and much of the detail will be informed by industry feedback and consultation.

When my friend David Lavin asked if I'd join his amazing agency part time to help build a marketing team, I immediately said yes. Ok, that's not true. I think we talked about this on and off for over a year before this thing finally happened. I mean, it's a little intimidating to be surrounded by the smartest people talking about the most important things on the planet and imagine that you can help promote them to the world. The content kinda speaks for itself. I like to think of myself as a megaphone. Well, maybe the batteries for the megaphone. Or the guy who buys the batteries. Or the guy who goes on Amazon and orders the batteries. For next day delivery. Regardless, it's a great ride.

When I was about 12 years old I imagined I'd work at an advertising agency. So here I was running a big one as a regional CEO. Created, planned, reported, sweated for some of the biggest names in the game. Got to throw around a business card that said "CEO". Met important people. Impressed some of them. Won business, lost business, won business again.

Major step up from our indie shop after the acquisition. Met brilliant people, some of who I'm still close with. Worked on global accounts like P&G and Toyota. Got to work at an agency so popular that even my mom heard of it. It was a great time.

Left my job in marketing to go start an advertising agency. I was young. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Did amazing things with amazing people. Grew to about 50 people. Most were amazing. You know who you are. Threw amazing parties. Visited amazing places. Won some awards. After a solid 10 year run we sold the agency to a bigger agency and threw another party to celebrate. Someone gifted me a mechanical rodeo bull at that party. I'm not sure where that bull went but apparently not to the offices of the new agency.
