About Alex Thomas
I am a passionate, hard-working graphic designer with over 14 years experience creating great looking designs in both print and digital. I love to learn new things and push myself to create better and better work.During my 10 year career at Future Publishing I worked on market-leading consumer magazines like MacFormat where I was the art lead on the launch of it's award-winning iPad edition. I produced 1,000s of pages of editorial, art directed hundreds of photo shoots (in the studio and on location), commissioned dozens of illustrations and even directed videos and animations. I also found time to teach myself to write code and HTML in order to create MacFormat's interactive iPad edition using Future Publishing's bespoke digital software Future Folio.Since leaving Future I have worked in the world of corporate design joining the marketing department of IPL (a south west based IT firm) to help oversee the final stages of their rebrand and website launch as well as producing numerous brochures, illustrations, exhibitions stands and digital newsletters. I am now a freelance graphic designer continuing to work for both Future Publishing and IPL as well as several other clients. I love the variety of work that this enables me to produce as I work on everything from corporate branding to women's lifestyle magazines to comics and science fiction to company newsletters and exhibition stands. All of which I produce to the highest standard with an exacting eye for detail.
Listed skills include Magazines, Editorial, Publications, Publishing, and 13 others.

Freelance Graphic Designer
As a freelance designer I have worked for a number of clients including:Thursfields Solicitors, which I produce the company's quarterly review, collating text and images from their marketing team and applying it to a template which I created for them. This is then publishing in print and on their website. I produce departmental brochures in print and digital, company signage, assets for their website, posters for internal communications and assets for their email newsletter.Dialogix Ltd: I was commissioned by author Sarah Hill to produce the cover design for their self published book 'Where Did You Learn To Behave Like That?'. I worked with Sarah and her business partner Rachel Horton-Smyth to create a design which was both visually appealing but also commercially sound. I also helped them to design the interior of the book using an edited manuscript and prepare the pages for publication via Amazon's CreateSpace platform. Once the book was published I helped them develop Kindle and ePub versions of the book as well.MDS Technologies: I have produced infographics for this local IT compaany based around their Cloud services, adapting the artwork for different clients and also converting them for use on their company website.
Editor And Founder
Pipedream Comics was created as a result of a feature I wrote for Tap! The iPhone and iPad magazine for Future Publishing. I had so much extra interview material from great names in the comic industry that I did not want it to go to waste and so decided to start my own website based around the world of digital comics on the iPad and iPhone.Since then it has grown from a hobby blog to a much more serious website with a number of writers and numerous guest columns from big names within the industry. We feature regular reviews, previews and interviews with top names in the digital comics world and every year we run a poll to announce the Digital Comic of The Year (which is voted on by readers of the site via a Facebook poll). Previous winners include Liam Sharp's Captain Stone Is Missing and David Lloyd's Aces Weekly, both of which display our award prominently. As well as a way to share my passion for comics with the world, I find running Pipedream Comics has taught me lots about running a website from SEO and CSS to social media marketing and more. It has really helped me develop a much better understanding of digital and online publishing.
Design Manager
I worked with the team at That Media Thing to help produce design work for a number of their clients. Some of the highlights included: social media assets and gated content for Intel, working within their strict guidelines; infographics for clients Asus and CurrencyCloud; white papers for Computer World, adapting them to create a more exciting and editorial approach (including illustrations and diagrams); and an infographic for their client ViaTech about driver assisted vehicles.
Graphic Designer
At Cox & Cox I worked as their in-house graphic designer. The main part of my job was to manage the look of the website, regularly updating the creative on the front page of the site, as well as keeping landing pages current and up to date.In the summer of 2017, Cox & Cox moved CMS platforms from Magento 1 to Magento 2 and so I was involved with developing the new look for the site, interpreting mock ups from a creative design agency and implementing them within Cox & Cox's workflow. This was a new responsive site and so my designs had to work across desktop and mobile devices. As well as providing new designs for the home page and category landing pages, I was also required to put together a best practice guide for how to publish content on the site, interpreting information from the design and development agencies to ensure content could be updated easily and efficiently by the team at Cox & Cox.As well as working on the website, I was also involved in the production of their print catalogue, which started as a 84 page book and evolved into a 100 page edition. During my time there a new 144 page book was also developed which was aimed at their best customers and featured a very high-end aspirational design. I helped produce this along with other designers at the company. We worked with the buying and merchandising team to pick the best products and with the stylist to choose the best images for each section.Cox & Cox have their own in-house photo studio, and so I was responsible for processing images from the photo shoots, retouching them and preparing them for print and for use on the company website and managing the company's image library.Other jobs included the design of email marketing materials and social media assets for regular posts and also for events like sales and promotions. Producing thank you cards, magazine inserts and other printed materials, including, packaging labels, such as box artwork and stickers for all own-branded products.
Graphic Designer
Since going freelance I have worked on the following magazine and bookazines for Future Publishing: Digital Camera, Fit Tech, Handmade Celebrations, Handmade Fun for Kids, Hoop-La, Love Patchwork and Quilting, MacFormat (iPad Edition), Mollie Makes, Mollie Makes DIY Fashion, Simply Knitting, The Knitter and SFX magazine.I have also continued to work for IPL in their marketing department on a freelance basis producing brochures, illustrations, exhibition stands, email newsletters and more.
Creative In-House Artworker
I joined IPL in the middle of their rebrand and website launch and helped shepherd it to a conclusion with help from the Marketing Manager and his team. I worked in conjunction with their agency (Bright Butler) to update existing collateral with the new branding as well as help to develop new assets for new documents. I was also responsible for developing templates in Indesign, Word and Powerpoint, as well as finalising and writing the company's brand guidelines. I found working in a corporate environment with strict guidelines about uses of colour and style very challenging, but it gave me a different perspective on design which I think was invaluable.Since going freelance I have continued to work for IPL on a regular basis producing their monthly newsletter (which I helped develop well still there full time), as well as creating exhibition stand artwork and also introducing new illustration styles for some of their collateral.
Art Editor
I joined Future Publishing in 2003 to work on the launch of Digital Camera Shopper magazine. During 2 years on the magazine I gained invaluable experience art directing photo shoots in Future's in-house photo studio as well as gaining fantastic experience working on the launch of a new magazine. In 2005 when Digital Camera Shopper closed I joined the team on MacFormat magazine where I would stay for the next 8 years. During my time on MacFormat I was responsible for producing 1,000s of pages, art-directing 100s of photo shoots and commissioning dozens of illustrations in a wide variety of style and also developing covers for over 100 issues of the magazine. During my time on the magazine MacFormat rose to become the UK's best-selling Apple magazine and saw Apple launch revolutionary products like the iPad and iPhone. In this time I redesigned the magazine on two occasions, the second of which included the launch of a new interactive iPad edition using Future's in-house software FutureFolio. I was also involved the development of numerous specials including the iPhone Handbook, Switch to Mac and the Unofficial iPad Handbook and was also involved in the launch of Tap! magazine in both print and digital. In 2010 I was promoted to Managing Art Editor for the Apple Group overseeing a small team of designers and art editors who were responsible for producing the various Apple related titles published by Future Publishing. Prior to this I had experience of running and managing a small group of regular freelancers but this role also gave me experience of recruiting staff and conducting interviews.
