Senior undergraduate student at the prestigious Winston Salem State University majoring in Therapeutic Recreation. December 2022 I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Therapy. Post-graduation I plan to work in behavioral health with youth and adolescents. I've always had a passion for working with kids and getting them to love themselves. Therapeutic Recreation globally as a profession is the use of sports, recreation, and leisure as a modality to help people and help them achieve the therapy goals they may have. Therapeutic Recreation is taking what your client enjoys doing and using it. It focuses on all aspects of a person's wellbeing including spiritually, psychologically, cognitive, and social aspects. As a recreational therapist, you want to bring a sense of balance to their life and give people a purpose. It allows a person to maintain their dignity, to maintain aspects of who they are, to assist them with everything that they're going through in their current life whether it's an illness, Parkinson's disease, injuries, or dementia. You get to know the individuals that you're working with, you build your rapport, and from there you're able to plan individualized programs that are specific to their needs and interests. As a therapeutic recreation specialist, the skills that I possess first and foremost is having a passion for working and helping others. Communication skills, the ability to work well with adolescents, time management, and organizational skills are among the abilities I possess. These characteristics I have developed and reinforced throughout the years while working at daily jobs and attending school. I've also improved my problem-solving abilities, leadership, interpersonal skills, and creativity. These abilities are vital in the field of Therapeutic Recreation since you will be working and interacting with a diverse range of people. Having these talents makes me easy to get along with while also allowing me to do the work to the best of my abilities.
